Long-term performance and life cycle assessment of energy piles in three different climatic conditions

2020

Abstract The main purpose behind the use of energy piles is to enable the exploitation of geothermal energy for meeting the heating/cooling demands of buildings in an efficient and environment-friendly manner. However, the long-term performance of energy piles in different climatic conditions, along with their actual environmental impacts, has not been fully assessed. In this paper, the results of a finite element model taking into consideration the heating and cooling demands of a reference building, and the intermittent operation of a ground source heat pump, are revealed to examine the long-term performance of energy piles. Furthermore, a life cycle assessment model is implemented to com…

Fractional-order constitutive equations in mechanics and thermodynamics

2019

This chapter is devoted to the application of fractional calculus in mechanics of materials and thermodynamics. The use of fractional calculus in mechanics is related to the definition of fractional-order constitutive equations leading to the class of fractional hereditariness. In this regard, a brief description of the classical rheological models of material hereditariness and a comparison with the fractional elements are reported. It is shown that a rheological hierarchy corresponding to the fractional order stress-strain relation may be defined. Such a model provides a multi-scale mechanical picture of the power-law hereditariness and it leads toward an unique definition of material fre…

On numerical simulation of the continuous casting process

1988

In this paper a steady-state nonlinear parabolic-type model, which simulates the multiphase heat transfer during solidification in continuous casting, is presented. An enthalpy formulation is used and we apply a FE-method in space and an implicit Euler method in time. A detailed solution algorithm is presented. We compute the temperature distributions in the strand when the boundary conditions (mold/spray cooling) on the strand surface are known. The numerical model gives thereby a good basis for the testing of new designs of continuous-casting machines. An application of the model to continuous casting of billets is presented.

Preliminary CAD implementation of EU-DEMO primary heat transfer systems for HCPB breeding blanket option

2019

Abstract This paper focuses on the 3D CAD implementation of the pipework and the main equipment of the Primary Heat Transfer System of EU-DEMO fusion power plant. In particular, the systems related to the Helium-Cooled Pebble Bed Breeding Blanket option are considered here. During the pulse operation, the breeding blanket modules will be the main thermal power source; Divertor and the Vacuum Vessel will contribute in the definition of the total reactor power. All the In-Vessel generated power is rejected to the Power Conversion System through a molten salt Intermediate Heat Transport System. The latter is equipped with an Energy Storage System to allow for continuous operation also during t…

Using CFD to derive reduced order models for heat transfer in particle curtains

2015

3–D Eulerian–Eulerian CFD is used to simulate convective heat transfer in free falling particle curtains. Total heat loss for curtaining particles is compared to heat loss for isolated single particles. Spherical silica particles with density of 2,634 kg/m³ at 400 K (200 µm, 400 µm and 600 µm) flow at approximately 0.041 kg/s to 0.2 kg/s through a narrow slot in a rectangular box (0.45 m × 0.9 m × 0.225 m) filled with ambient air. The slot sizes through which the particles enter the rectangular box were 10 to 80 mm wide. Modifying the slot size at 0.041 kg/s for 400 µm particles can lead to 13% increases in rates of convective heat transfer per unit mass. A reduced order model was developed…

Modelling of EM glass convection

2008

PurposeTo develop the mathematical model, which allows predicting the temperature and flow distribution of an opaque glass melt with the temperature‐dependent properties in case it is generated by electromagnetic and thermal convection. Analysis has been done for geometry of the model crucible with the immersed rod electrodes. Numerical analysis is used as a tool for finding out the parameters of the system, which allow getting desiderated homogeneity of temperature field by EM action.Design/methodology/approachANSYS CFX software is implemented for coupling of EM, thermal and HD processes in the modelled system. Usability of non‐inductive approximation is shown using a full harmonic analysi…

Numerical investigation of thermomagnetic convection in a heated cylinder under the magnetic field of a solenoid

2011

The main objective of this paper is the numerical investigation of the process of thermomagnetic convection of a special temperature sensitive ferrofluid. The fluid is studied in a cylindrical domain, with constant temperatures on the top and bottom ends and adiabatic boundary conditions on the sidewalls. The thermomagnetic convection is generated by a non-uniform constant magnetic field of a solenoid, which is placed in a hollow area inside the domain. It has been found that the efficiency of convective heat transfer in such a set-up can be increased up to sevenfold by magnetic field within the studied range of parameters.

Influence of Skin Depth on Convective Heat Transfer in Induction Heating

2017

International audience; We investigate convection driven by induction heating of a horizontal fluid layer using direct numerical simulations (DNS). This problem is of particular interest in the context of nuclear severe accident mastering. In a real severe accident, the molten core is subjected to homogeneous internal sources resulting from nuclear disintegrations. This situation is mimicked in the laboratory using induction heating as the internal source. In induction heating, however, heat sources are localized in the skin layer. Consequently, this concentration of heat may modify the flow and wall heat transfer compared to the case of homogeneous internal sources. DNS are carried out for…

Heat transfer calculation in a free convection air solar collector

1998

This paper deals with the free convective air flow developing in a vertical channel with a rectangular cross-section heated on one side. The channel geometric and physical properties are such as to simulate an air solar collector suitable for building heating. A calculation method that can be applied to the transient combined heat transfer by conduction through the wall and by convection from the wall to the air stream is presented. The conduction across the wall is computed with a one-dimensional, time-dependent finite difference scheme, with convective boundary conditions at both wall surfaces. For the free convective flow along the channel, the air flow rate and the mean convective coeff…
